Case Study
New recruitment of an employee in a print shop

Company:

The company is a small print shop that hired a new employee with a disability.

Disability and impairment of the employee:

The woman is hearing impaired or slightly hard of hearing and also has an allergy to solvents. She has difficulty understanding people who speak quietly - especially when there is background noise. She then asks people to speak louder or seeks out quieter areas to communicate. The degree of disability (GdB) is 30. The woman was given equal status with people with a severe disability on application by the employment agency.

Training and job:

The woman is a trained media technologist in printing and was unemployed until she was hired by the company as a new printer.

Workplace and work task:

The employee is employed in the print shop on a modern offset printing machine for printing small and large print runs.
The following aspects make it possible for the employee to work in a way that is suitable for disabled people:
  • the good operating comfort (e.g. automatic feed and output) of the machine.
  • the fact that the machine and printing technology largely avoid contact with ink and solvents,
  • the low noise level of the machine during printing and
  • the low susceptibility to faults
If a fault does occur, this is signaled acoustically and displayed visually on the machine's control panel.

Occupational health and safety:

The noise and sound pressure level increases due to additional machines in the print shop. The company therefore provides employees with ear muffs and ear plugs.

Assistive products used:

Promotion and participation:

The company received an integration grant from the employment agency as a wage cost subsidy for the newly hired employee, who was previously unemployed and of equal status. The employment agency's technical advisory service provided support for occupational inclusion - particularly with regard to design suitable for disabled people and occupational health and safety.
