Case Study
Home service employee at DHL Group - Deutsche Post

Company:

DHL Group is a global logistics and postal services company. In Germany, the DHL Group includes Deutsche Post, which focuses on mail shipments, and DHL, which focuses on parcel shipments. Diversity, equal opportunities, inclusion and belonging play an important role at the Group. These aspects are therefore also seen as success factors for the Group. For example, people with disabilities are to be actively supported in their inclusion so that they can contribute their skills and thus fully exploit their potential.

Disability and impairment of the employee:

The man is deaf and unable to perceive acoustic information, e.g. spoken language and signals. However, he can understand his conversation partners by lip-reading if they speak slowly and the movements of their lips are easily recognizable. Due to his disability, audible information must be modified so that it can be perceived visually or tactilely by the man. The degree of disability (GdB) is 100.

Education and occupation:

The employee attended a school specializing in hearing and communication and works in the housekeeping department of a branch of the company. He was trained internally for the tasks in house service. The training was carried out step by step by demonstrating and copying the respective work task. Gestures, signs or symbols and written notes were used for communication during the induction.

Workplace and work task:

As an employee of the house service, he is responsible for the office and, in addition to distributing incoming mail, is also responsible for processing copy orders, registered mail and postal delivery certificates. In addition to office tasks, the man also carries out various service activities such as maintaining the notice board, processing and dispatching outgoing mail or disposing of materials or confidential documents in the building.

Work organization:

Work instructions and communication with other employees are carried out in writing by e-mail or paper or notes. A sign language interpreter is provided for staff meetings.

Occupational health and safety:

In the event of a fire, the deaf employee is alerted via an optical signaling device installed in the office.

Aids used - display of products:

Alarm reporting systems for the environment

Support and participation:

The costs incurred to date for the sign language interpreter were paid from the budget of the branch's works council. However, corresponding funding can also be provided by the Integration or Inclusion Office, whose tasks also include funding the disability-related visual signaling device to raise the alarm in the event of a fire.
